Mental Health vs. Mental Illness: Understanding the difference

Mental health and mental illness are often used interchangeably, but they are distinct concepts that should be viewed as dimensions requiring separate attention. Mental health can be positive or negative and refers to the overall well-being of an individual, while mental illness refers to specific diagnosed mental disorders that affect thinking, feeling, mood, and behavior. Mental illness includes diagnoses including bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, and many other disorders. This article focuses on mental health.

When defining mental health, many refer to the CDC’s definition. According to the CDC, mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health is not a static condition and can change over time, influenced by various factors. Employers should consider work-related factors that may contribute to poor mental health among staff. – Limited support from colleagues or supervisors

– Being harassed or bullied

– Discrimination and inequality

– Inadequate pay

– Excessive workloads (e.g., understaffing)
